When I discovered a patch of blackberries surrounding the slough at the end of my family's road, I made it a habit to go and pick a colander full on my evening walks to watch the sunset from the fields. On one such occasion, I heard a rustling of footsteps behind me. Afraid I was going to be told off for picking the berries (though they were on public property), I hesitated to turn around. It wasn't until I heard our neighbor Jerry say, “Oh, are you interested in picking fruit?” that I turned around in happy surprise. It so happened that Jerry had a whole orchard of peaches, plums, and nectarines that he was more than happy to share with me. I started with a tiny box, until Jerry said, “No, she needs a bigger one,” to his wife, insisting that I pick from all the best trees, and sample along the way. In the end, I came home with two big boxes of beautiful fruit and a renewed gratitude for neighborly generosity.
